What homeowners should know
General painting education from the archived site — a quick primer before your next project.
How do I know if it's time to repaint?
Most exterior paint jobs last somewhere in the 5–10 year range, depending on climate, sun exposure, and surface prep. Chalking paint — a powdery residue that rubs off on your hand when you touch the surface — is one of the clearest signs a surface is due for a fresh coat.
Why does prep work matter so much?
Prep work — cleaning, scraping, sanding, and priming as needed — is what determines how well paint adheres and how long a paint job lasts. Skipping prep is the most common reason a paint job fails early.
Do I need one coat of paint or two?
It depends on the surface, the color change, and the paint's coverage. Dramatic color changes and bare or repaired surfaces typically need two coats for even coverage and long-term durability; a like-for-like color refresh may only need one.
Does paint sheen matter?
Yes — sheen affects both look and durability. Higher-sheen finishes (satin, semi-gloss) tend to be more washable and durable, which is why they're common on trim, doors, and high-traffic areas, while flatter finishes are often preferred on walls and ceilings for a softer look.
